The Man Who Couldn't Stop Vomiting
A young man came to see me. He was pale, dehydrated, and miserable. He had been vomiting for weeks. Not a stomach bug. Not food poisoning. This was relentless, day after day, and it was ruining his life.
A lot of doctors would have started ordering tests. Upper GI series. CT scan. Bloodwork panels. And when those came back normal, more tests. That is how it usually goes, and a lot of money gets wasted in the process.
I did something different. I just talked to him.
Two things jumped out almost immediately. First, the only thing that gave him any relief was scalding hot showers. Not warm. Hot. He would stand under the water for an hour at a time because it was the only thing that stopped the nausea.
Second, he used a common substance daily that seemed to help the nausea for a little while. So of course he kept using it, thinking it was the solution. But every single time, the vomiting came back.
I had the diagnosis in about five minutes. No imaging. No expensive workups. Just a careful history and one question most doctors never think to ask.
The answer, and the detail about this man’s job that makes the whole story unforgettable, is inside the full article.
